Lure Cast — Lure Flight Simulator

User guide

Version 0.3 (28 October 2026)

Lure Cast computes how a cast lure flies and how far it goes from the lure, rod, line and spot conditions, and shows it in 3D. Everything is computed in your browser.

How to use

  1. Choose a lure type under “Lure”, or enter its shape, size and weight.
  2. Choose a production rod under “Rod”, or enter the values. The presets and the rod model are the same as in the Hookset Mechanics Simulator. You can also read a link from its “Copy a link to these conditions” or a rod file (.rod.json).
  3. Set the line, the cast and the spot and conditions. Left-handed anglers choose “Left-handed”.
  4. Press and hold the input strip below the 3D view, drag right to swing back and left to cast (the other way round for left-handed anglers). The line is released the moment you let go. The rod bends live while you swing, and the result plays on when you let go.
  5. Changing any condition recomputes it with your last cast motion. “Cast” (or Enter) replays the last cast (or the cast settings if you have not cast yet) from the start.
  6. The distance, release speed and angle, tension in the drop, rod bend and bending strain appear on the right. “Recent casts” lets you compare, and earlier trajectories stay faintly in the 3D view.

Tips

  • Swing back slowly and go straight into the forward cast without pausing. Pausing or jerking back lets the lure swing over the tip and snap the line tight, which shocks the rod and line (you will see tension and strain warnings).
  • Letting go when the rod is a little past vertical (the 10–11 o’clock position) casts far. With “Release” set to “At the release angle” the line is released at that angle even if you keep pressing.
  • “Sensitivity” sets how far the rod turns across the full width of the strip.

Lure settings and aerodynamics

Under “Lure” you can set, besides the shape, size and weight, the hook size, the line-eye position, the centre of mass (share of the length from the head and drop), a moving weight (ball weight and a magnet at the front) and the surface. From these the body shape, centre of mass, inertia, hooks and moving weight are built, and the aerodynamic forces come from the body’s cross-sections.

“Aerodynamics” below shows a side view (outline, centre of mass, eye, hooks, the moving weight’s tunnel), head-first stability (a positive Cm_α turns the lure back head-first), trim angles and the head-first and tail-first drag coefficients. In the 3D view, “X-ray” makes the body translucent to show the moving weight, and “Arrows” shows the lure axis and its direction of travel. With a moving weight, “Compare with a fixed weight” in the results compares the distance with the weight fixed at the front, middle and rear.

Cast settings

With “Cast with” set to “Cast settings”, the rod moves from ready to back-cast, pauses and swings through as set by the values — handy for comparing conditions. Angles are the grip’s tilt from vertical (forward +, back −). “Find the release angle that casts farthest” sets the best angle for the current conditions.

Assumptions and limits of version 0.3

  • The rod’s bend, recovery and vibration are computed from the same rod model as the Hookset Mechanics Simulator (stiffness distribution and mass). Rod air drag and guide weight are not included.
  • The lure’s aerodynamic forces come from its body shape (size, shape and variation of its cross-sections along the length) using slender-body theory and cross-flow drag per section. The method is checked against wind-tunnel data, but it does not guarantee real values for any shape. Shapes that are not slender, such as flat lures, are less accurate.
  • There is no line after the release yet, so most lures fly sideways (around 90° angle of attack). Real lures fly tail-first stably largely because the line pulls the eye backward; this changes in the next version, which adds the line.
  • Only the drop (line from the tip to the lure, including line stretch) is computed. Line drag after the release, the spool and the guides come in later versions, so the distance comes out longer than in real casting. Shocks in the drop may also come out stronger than in reality, as line damping and the like are not included yet.
  • Wind is entered at 10 m and is weaker closer to the water. “Gustiness” adds gusts (the same gust pattern number gives the same wind).
  • The values are estimates. Use them to compare conditions.

Saving and sharing

“Copy a link to these conditions” shares the current conditions as a URL. “Save conditions” saves them to a file and “Open conditions” reads it back.
